Crumb Rubber Arena Footing: 2011

Here are some pieces of information that have been reported and a link to a very thorough article in TheHorse.com

· Cases have been confirmed in Oregon, Washington and California as well as other states and also in South Africa.

· Many horses are under quarantine. Veterinarians are still working to determine the extent of the outbreak. The number of horses confirmed or suspected to have EVH-1 remains on the rise, with several states reporting cases. A common point of origin for all the positive horses is the National Cutting Horse Association's (NCHA) Western National Championship competition, held April 28-May 8 in Ogden, Utah.

· There have been equine deaths.

· Many states are considering travel restrictions.

· Many barns are restricting hauls-ins, and canceling shows, clinics etc.

· Equine herpesvirus is highly contagious and can cause a variety of ailments in horses, including rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease mostly of young horses), abortion in broodmares, and myeloencephalopathy (evident in the neurologic form). The virus is not transmissible to humans. Clinical signs of the neurologic EHV-1 form include fever, ataxia (incoordination), weakness or paralysis of the hind limbs, and incontinence. The virus is generally passed from horse to horse via aerosol transmission (when affected animals sneeze/cough) and contact with nasal secretions.

· Currently, there is no equine vaccine that has a label claim for protection against the neurological strain of the virus.

Howdy,

I have been selling crumb rubber for horse arenas for over a decade in the Pacific Northwest. I hope to educate you to the use of crumb rubber in horse arenas and other applications including athletic fields, golf courses, orchards and simple gardening. I will also provide you important tips for building your arena, installing the crumb rubber, concerns of your sand quality, flooding and many other important issues relating to the use of crumb rubber.

Today I will discuss our different sizes of crumb rubber. We have:

· ¼ inch with fiber which is the most commonly used size.

· ½ inch with and without fiber, which is often used by Jumpers and

· 3/8 inch black which is use mostly by dressage folks.
